Chancellor Emeritus, University of Missouri
Brady J. Deaton was Chancellor (now Emeritus) of the University of Missouri (2004-2013) after serving as Provost (MU), Chair of their Social Science Unit (MU), and Associate Director of the Center for International Development (VA Tech). He founded (2014) and currently directs the Deaton Institute for University Leadership in International Development established in recognition of his research and commitment to international development. Previous faculty positions: Agricultural Economics, University of Tennessee and VA Tech. While at UT, he was appointed staff director of the Special Task Force on Food for Peace for the USDA and at VaTech served as coordinator of the Rural Development Research and Extension Program and later as associate director of the Office for International Development.
Education and Honors: BS and MA, University of Kentucky; PhD, University of Wisconsin. He received honorary degrees from universities in Korea, Thailand, Georgia, and India. National, state and organizational recognition includes the Malone Award from the APLU for furthering international education in public higher education; University of Kentucky Alumni Hall of Fame; Outstanding Missourian; and a "Distinguished Guest in Residence " at New York University. In 2024 he served as Interim Director of the Va Tech Center for International Research and Educational development.
Publications: over a hundred articles, book chapters and monographs. Current research examines the relationship among national and local policy leadership and income distribution.
Brady served on/ chaired boards for numerous national and regional organizations, including the Academic Affairs Council of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU); the Missouri Council on Public Higher Education; and OCLC. In 2011, President Obama appointed Brady as Chair of the Board for International Food and Agricultural Development (BIFAD), and reappointed him in 2012 and 2016 for four-year terms.
Brady and Anne (proud parents of 4 children and seven grandchildren) live in Virginia.
